![]() What followed was a very awkward conversation over speaker phone a few days later between me, a publicist and a brand manager with Starbucks. So I got in touch with Starbucks’ media people and asked them, in a more diplomatic way, why the espresso sucks. But I wanted to hear Starbucks’ responses to them. He also pointed out that Starbucks baristas have no power to make necessary adjustments for good coffee, because their machines are mostly automatic.Īll of these seemed like valid explanations. ![]() He also posited that Starbucks purposely over-roasts its coffee - hence the dark, oily beans and the notorious burned flavour - because it is easier to maintain consistency that way. He wondered if it’s possible to buy quality coffee beans at such massive quantities. James had a number of theories as to why Starbucks espresso is so bad. Starbucks is almost three times as expensive, and many times more gross. And here’s the best part: a shot of espresso at Tim Hortons is 63 freaking cents, taxes in, while at Starbucks it’s $1.85. Tim Hortons, he found, was the most flavourful of the bunch. “I’m convinced I’ll get mouth cancer from that one espresso I had there.” ![]() “Tar bucks was in a league of its own,” he said. James recently did a taste test of espresso from major coffee chains - Tim Hortons, Timothy’s, Aroma, Second Cup and Starbucks - and concluded that Starbucks was by far the worst. “It tastes like Windex filtered through burned toast.” “It’s like the worst of the worst,” he confirmed. He’s not exactly an unbiased source, considering Starbucks is a competitor of his - kind of - but I wanted to hear his feedback. This man makes some of the best coffee in the city. But to gain some insight in the matter, I got in touch with Sam James. In hindsight, I may have been a bit rude about it, which is probably why I didn’t get an answer. Hey how do you make such grotesque espresso? Seriously, I am fascinated. I raised the issue with Starbucks a while back, over Twitter. It is the very foundation of all the other terrible, foamy beverages Starbucks sells. How can a business get away with selling such a shoddy product? And it’s not like espresso is a side project for Starbucks. There is a lot of pent up rage going on here. I have felt this way about Starbucks for a long time. It has notes of turpentine, tar and botched moonshine, the kind that makes you go blind. It’s acrid bitter with an aftertaste of acrid bitter. I am convinced that it’s one of the grossest things you can buy, anywhere, period. Starbucks espresso was a good candidate for this column. For good espresso in Toronto, go to Lit, Café Pamenar or Sam James Coffee Bar. It can be citrusy, nutty, sweet and yes, bitter too, but not overwhelmingly so. Many people think espresso is supposed to be mostly bitter, but a good shot is a thing of balanced beauty. I can’t say the same for the place that cannot be named. I drink Tim Hortons espresso on the regular, for utilitarian purposes, because it is actually palatable. ![]() I’m the kind of guy to swish espresso around in my mouth like it’s wine, but I’m not completely obtuse. This place is not good, especially if you’re an espresso jerk like me. Which meant that in order to get an espresso, I had to go to the place that cannot be named.įine, I’ll name it. There is little in the way of good food, and even less in the way of good coffee.Īnd last month, two of the “best” options for espresso in the area - Tim Hortons and Artisano - underwent renovations at the exact same time. The smell is really nice, though, not amazing. Is it the absolute worst? No, I mean, I could probably find a use for this stuff (if I didn’t have an endless line of options). To this day, it doesn’t seem to work on my skin, but I’ve read other complaining about it as well. The performance is just lackluster and how good it smells can’t really save it entirely. It’s a simple sort of fragrance, but is pretty unique in how it smells. The aroma itself, isn’t the issue, it’s the performance. Simple and straightforward, but very pleasant. ![]() It’s much better than I remember, a nice spiciness, with herbal qualities, and wood. Not really a nightlife cologne.ĭo I like Euphoria overall? I like the smell. Though, I’d say that this one, seems like a better fit for guys in their 20s. It’s inoffensive, so work or school, is just fine. It is clean and fresh enough, to be versatile, as to what occasions you could wear it. I think that it’s best in moderate climates. Seasonally, Euphoria Men doesn’t really strike me as appealing to only one season. I’ve even used the spray deodorant and it lasts about the same as the actual cologne. It’ll go for 3-4 hours, on my skin, and pretty much be completely evaporated by the time hour four starts up. It’s not completely weak, in terms of how it projects, but it isn’t a standout either. This was always one of my problems with this fragrance, the performance being sub par. The sillage on Euphoria is pretty moderate, at first, then quite soft. What I get most of the wear is the woods: cedar and redwood. How this cologne smells, has definitely grown in esteem with me, since I’ve last encountered it. I like it, the blend of ginger/pepper/basil with amber is really enjoyable. Euphoria shifts toward being a ginger/herbal spice, with the amber, and wood (lots of fresh cedar). The amber note adds a warm somewhat sweet aroma, that is joined by basil, a bit of smooth suede, and a solid woody base. It is joined by its ‘pepper cocktail’ note, which gives a spicy punch to what otherwise would be more of a lighter freshness. Ginger is the main attraction, which has really become a note, that I love wearing as of late (particularly in Burberry Brit). However, I’ve had a chance to retry it recently, and wanted to give this cologne a fair shake.Įuphoria Men opens up with it’s spiciness front and center. I wasn’t crazy about this fragrance back then, I didn’t hate it, and was more or less indifferent toward Euphoria. I’m coming back to review this one again, after several years. Notes include: chilled sudachi, raindrop accord, solid amber, cedar leaf, black basil, patchouli, creamy suede, ginger pepper cocktail, Brazilian redwoodĬlick here to try: CK Euphoria Men Eau De Toilette Spray 3.4 fl oz / 100 ml ![]() There are many redaction software packages available that have similar features. ![]() If you do this, the text will still be found through search or copy and paste. In Euclidean geometry, the base angles can not be obtuse (greater than 90°) or right (equal to 90°) because their measures would sum to at least 180°, the total of all angles in any Euclidean triangle. Whether an isosceles triangle is acute, right or obtuse depends only on the angle at its apex. In the equilateral triangle case, since all sides are equal, any side can be called the base. The vertex opposite the base is called the apex. The angle included by the legs is called the vertex angle and the angles that have the base as one of their sides are called the base angles. In an isosceles triangle that has exactly two equal sides, the equal sides are called legs and the third side is called the base. The same word is used, for instance, for isosceles trapezoids, trapezoids with two equal sides, and for isosceles sets, sets of points every three of which form an isosceles triangle. "Isosceles" is made from the Greek roots "isos" (equal) and "skelos" (leg). A triangle that is not isosceles (having three unequal sides) is called scalene. The difference between these two definitions is that the modern version makes equilateral triangles (with three equal sides) a special case of isosceles triangles. Terminology, classification, and examples Įuclid defined an isosceles triangle as a triangle with exactly two equal sides, but modern treatments prefer to define isosceles triangles as having at least two equal sides. 3 Isosceles subdivision of other shapes. ![]()
